According to the Roman calendar, November was the ninth month of the year. It got its name from the Latin word “Novem” which means “nine”. Originally it first had 30 days, then there were 29 and then 31. During this era, the year began with the month of March and so November was the ninth month. The other names commonly used for November were “Novembre” in Middle English; “Novembris Mensis” in Latin and in Old English it was called “Blotmanad” meaning blood month.

Later when the Gregorian calendar was recognized across the world, November became the eleventh month. But its name was not changed. It is one among the four months in Gregorian calendar which has 30 days. November had 29 days only, when the calendar was reformed by King Numa Pompilius around 700 BCE who added January and February to the Gregorian calendar. However, another day was added to this month making it a 30-days month during Julian calendar reforms.

Fact 3 Differences In Weather And Climate

Although the calendar is followed by people living in all parts of the world, the weather is significantly different. When it is the beginning of winter or the autumn season in the Northern Hemisphere, it is spring time in the Southern Hemisphere. So the weather that people experience in May in the North is enjoyed by people living in the southern portion of the world in November.

November, in the Northern Hemisphere is the time between fall and winter. There is a great change in nature. The leaves begin to dry and fall and then the trees become almost bare by the end of the month. Nature loses her green coat. November was referred to as the “wind month” by Anglo-Saxons and also “blood month” most probably because they killed their cattle for food during this month.
